DRIVING GUIDE
Driving Test Tips for First-Time Candidates
The best way to do well in a driving test is to practise the manoeuvres until they are routine, make your observation clearly visible and arrive calm and prepared. This guide shares practical tips for first-time candidates; for official test rules, check with the KP traffic police or licensing office.

Key takeaways
- Practise every likely manoeuvre until it feels routine.
- Make mirror and blind-spot checks clearly visible with a head movement.
- Control matters more than speed; slow, deliberate manoeuvres look and feel safer.
- Learn road signs thoroughly for any sign or theory test.
- Prepare documents the night before and confirm requirements with the licensing office.
Start Preparing Early
A test is not the moment to discover a weak spot. Start preparing weeks ahead, not days. Make a list of the skills you are least confident about, such as reversing, parking or hill starts, and practise them deliberately. If you are taking lessons, tell your instructor that the test is your goal so practice can focus on it.
Know What the Test Involves
Test formats can vary and change. In Pakistan, tests commonly include a road sign or rules test and a practical driving test with tasks such as moving off, stopping, reversing or manoeuvring in a marked area. Ask at the licensing office what your test will include, so you are practising the right things. Our licence guide explains the general process.
Tips for the Practical Test
1. Make observation visible
Examiners cannot read your mind. If you only flick your eyes to the mirror, it may look as though you did not check. Turn your head slightly for mirror checks and clearly look over your shoulder for blind spots before moving off or changing position.
2. Use a consistent routine
Mirror, signal, then move. Use the same sequence every time you move off, turn or change lane. Routines hold up under pressure better than memory.
3. Slow down your manoeuvres
Speed does not earn marks; control does. Reverse and park slowly so you have time to correct small errors. Stopping briefly to reassess is better than pushing on and hitting a marker.
4. Master clutch and brake control
In a manual car, practise holding the car at the biting point until it is second nature. Rolling back on a slope or stalling repeatedly signals poor control. In an automatic, smooth brake pressure is what matters.
5. Keep both hands on the wheel
Except when changing gear or using controls, keep both hands on the wheel. It looks controlled and it is safer.
6. Listen carefully
If you do not understand an instruction, ask politely for it to be repeated. It is far better than guessing.
Tips for the Sign or Theory Test
Learn road signs by category: warning signs, mandatory signs, prohibitory signs and information signs. Understand what each one means in practice, not just its name. Practise with friends or family quizzing you, and revise the basic rules of priority at junctions and roundabouts.
Managing Test-Day Nerves
- Sleep well the night before and eat before the test.
- Arrive early so you are not rushed.
- Take a few slow breaths before you start the car.
- If you make a small mistake, do not dwell on it. Keep driving safely.
- Remember that the examiner wants to see safe, controlled driving, not perfection.
What to Bring
Bring every document the licensing office asks for, such as your identity card, learner permit and any forms or receipts. Check the list again the day before, because requirements can change. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes that let you feel the pedals.
Common Reasons Candidates Struggle
| Problem | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| Missed or invisible mirror checks | Turn your head clearly; practise the routine on every drive |
| Rolling back on a slope | Practise hill starts with the handbrake until automatic |
| Hitting markers when reversing | Go slower, use mirrors, stop and correct |
| Forgetting to signal | Use mirror, signal, move every time |
| Panicking after a mistake | Breathe, refocus and carry on safely |
After the Test
Whatever the result, think about what went well and what you can improve. If you need to retake it, focus practice on the areas that caused trouble. And once you have your licence, keep the good habits you built during preparation.
