DRIVING GUIDE

Hill Driving Tips for Abbottabad Roads

To drive safely on Abbottabad's hills, master the hill start, use a low gear on descents instead of riding the brakes, slow down before bends and give way sensibly on narrow roads. Practise each skill with an instructor on gentle slopes first, then build up.

Key takeaways

  • Use the handbrake for hill starts until you are fully confident.
  • Select a low gear before a descent, not halfway down.
  • Never coast downhill in neutral.
  • Slow down before a bend, not in it.
  • Leave extra space behind vehicles on climbs, in case they roll back.

Why Hills Need Special Skills

On flat roads, gravity is neutral. On hills it is either pulling you back or pushing you forward. Uphill, the car wants to roll back when you stop. Downhill, it wants to speed up. Good hill driving is about managing that force calmly with the right technique.

Hill Starts in a Manual Car

  1. Handbrake on, clutch down. Select first gear while holding the car on the handbrake.
  2. Add a little throttle. Slightly more than on flat ground.
  3. Find the biting point. Raise the clutch until the engine note drops and the car feels ready to pull.
  4. Check and release. Mirrors and blind spot, then release the handbrake smoothly as you add throttle and raise the clutch gently.

If the car starts to roll back, press the clutch and brake, reapply the handbrake and start again. Practise on gentle slopes before steeper ones.

Hill Starts in an Automatic

Hold the car on the footbrake or handbrake. When ready, check around you, then move your right foot from brake to accelerator smoothly. Some automatics hold briefly on slopes; do not rely on it until you know your car.

Going Downhill

The most common downhill mistake is relying only on the brakes. On long or steep descents, brakes can overheat and lose effectiveness. Instead:

  • Choose a low gear before the descent begins (second or even first on very steep slopes in a manual; a lower selector position in an automatic if available).
  • Let the engine hold your speed, using the brakes gently to adjust.
  • Never coast in neutral or with the clutch held down.
  • Keep extra distance from the vehicle in front.

Bends on Slopes

Many Abbottabad bends are combined with gradients, and some are blind. Slow down on the straight before the bend, keep to your side of the road, and look as far around the bend as you can. Avoid braking hard mid-bend. On blind bends, local drivers often use a short horn; use it sensibly and be ready for oncoming traffic.

Narrow Roads and Giving Way

Some hill roads are too narrow for two vehicles to pass comfortably. A common courtesy is that the vehicle going downhill gives way to the vehicle coming up, because restarting uphill is harder. However, always act on the situation in front of you. If there is a safe place to pull in on your side, use it. Be patient, signal clearly and never force your way through.

Parking on a Slope

  • Apply the handbrake firmly.
  • In a manual, leave the car in first gear when facing uphill or reverse when facing downhill.
  • In an automatic, select P.
  • Turn the wheels towards the kerb when facing downhill, and away when facing uphill if there is a kerb, so the car rolls into it rather than into the road.

Hills in Bad Weather

Rain reduces grip, which makes hill starts more likely to spin the wheels and descents more likely to slide. Use gentler throttle, lower speed and more distance. In fog, bends become harder to judge; slow down and use dipped headlights. Read our rain and fog guide.

Practice Plan

A simple hill practice plan
StageFocus
Gentle slopesHolding the car still and smooth hill starts
Steeper slopesHill starts with traffic behind
DescentsLow gear, steady speed, gentle braking
Combined routesClimbs, descents and bends together

Our hill driving training follows this kind of progression, and slope work is part of both courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop rolling back on a hill?

Use the handbrake, find the biting point (in a manual), and release the handbrake only when the car is ready to pull.

Should I brake all the way downhill?

No. Use a low gear so the engine helps control speed, and brake gently to adjust.

Who gives way on a narrow hill road?

Commonly the downhill vehicle gives way, but always act on the situation and use safe passing places.
