Driving Without a Clutch

An automatic car has two pedals, accelerator and brake, and a selector instead of a gear stick. The car changes gear for you. That frees up attention for the parts of driving that keep you safe: where you look, how you position the car, how early you brake and how you judge gaps in traffic.

Automatic cars are becoming more common in Abbottabad households, and many learners who will drive one at home see no reason to learn a clutch first. Others choose automatic because they feel anxious and want fewer things to think about while they build confidence.

Who Automatic Lessons Suit

Nervous beginners

Fewer controls means less to worry about in the first lessons.

Older learners

A simpler car helps people starting later in life feel at ease.

Ladies driving locally

Many women choose automatic for school runs and errands.

Families with an automatic car

Learn in the same type of car you will drive at home.

Step-by-Step Automatic Progression

  1. Selector and pedals. P, R, N and D, right foot only, smooth pressure on brake and accelerator.
  2. Creep and control. Using the car's natural creep in D to move slowly, steer and stop precisely.
  3. Roads and junctions. Lane position, mirrors, turning and giving way in light traffic.
  4. Slopes, parking, traffic. Holding the car on hills, controlled descents, reversing, parking and busier routes.

Beginner Mistakes in Automatic Cars and How We Correct Them

Using the left foot on the brake

It feels natural to use both feet when there are two pedals, but it leads to braking and accelerating at the same time. From the first lesson we keep your left foot resting and your right foot doing all the work.

Forgetting the car creeps

In D the car moves forward slowly without any throttle. New drivers sometimes roll into a gap they did not mean to take. We practise holding the brake at junctions and releasing it only when you have decided to go.

Over-relying on the brakes downhill

Automatic does not mean you ignore slopes. On long descents we show you how to use a lower selector position, if the car has one, so you do not overheat the brakes on Abbottabad's steeper roads.

Selecting gears while moving

Shifting into R or P before the car has fully stopped can damage the gearbox. We drill a simple rule: stop completely, then change.

Safety Habits for Automatic Drivers

  • Foot firmly on the brake before moving the selector.
  • Handbrake on and P selected when you park.
  • Mirrors before every change of speed or direction.
  • Smooth, early braking rather than late, hard stops.
  • Extra distance behind motorcycles and rickshaws, which can stop suddenly.

Automatic Driving on Local Roads

Hills are easier in an automatic, but they still need skill. You will learn to hold the car on a slope with the brake, move off without rolling back and control speed on the way down. Once the basics are in place, your instructor plans routes with junctions, bends and mixed traffic similar to what you will meet driving around Abbottabad every day.

Automatic in the 10-Day or 20-Day Course

Tell us you want an automatic car when you book either course. Because there is no clutch to master, many learners find the 10-day course enough. If you are nervous or preparing for the test, the 20-day course adds extended practice and test preparation.

I am 52 and thought it was too late. Learning in an automatic made it manageable, and my instructor never rushed me.

Farzana Q., Supply

I only needed to drive our automatic for school runs. Ten days was enough to feel comfortable.
