DRIVING GUIDE
What Happens on Your First Day of Driving Lessons
Your first driving lesson is about getting comfortable, not driving in traffic. You will set up the seat and mirrors, learn the controls, and, when ready, move off and stop slowly in a quiet place. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes, and tell your instructor if you feel nervous.

Key takeaways
- The first lesson happens in a quiet place, not busy traffic.
- You will learn seat and mirror setup and every main control.
- Most learners move off and stop slowly by the end of the lesson.
- Wear comfortable clothes and flat, thin-soled shoes.
- Feeling nervous is normal; tell your instructor at the start.
Before the Lesson
A little preparation helps you arrive relaxed. Get a good night's sleep, eat something light beforehand and drink water. Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move your arms and legs freely, and flat shoes with a thin sole so you can feel the pedals. Avoid heels, loose slippers or heavy boots. Ladies should secure a dupatta or scarf so it does not fall over the controls.
If you have pick and drop, be ready at the agreed point a few minutes early. If you are coming to the school, allow time to find it without rushing.
Step by Step: A Typical First Lesson
- Introductions. Your instructor asks about any experience and how you feel about driving.
- Cockpit drill. Doors, seat, steering, seat belt and mirrors, set up for you.
- The controls. Pedals, steering, gears or selector, handbrake, indicators, lights and wipers.
- First movements. Moving off slowly, steering gently and stopping smoothly.
- Feedback. A short chat about what went well and what comes next.
The Cockpit Drill
Before the engine starts, you will learn a routine to use every time you drive:
- Doors: closed properly.
- Seat: close enough to press pedals fully with a slight bend in the knee; backrest supporting you.
- Steering: arms slightly bent when holding the wheel.
- Seat belt: fastened and flat across your body.
- Mirrors: interior and side mirrors set to show the road behind.
Learning the Controls
In a manual car, you will learn what the clutch does and practise finding the biting point. In an automatic, you will learn the selector positions (P, R, N, D) and how to keep your right foot doing all the work. In both, you will learn the handbrake, indicators, lights and wipers. Your instructor will explain each control and let you try it while the car is stationary.
Moving for the First Time
When you are ready, you will move off slowly on a quiet road or open area. The goal is not distance but control: moving off smoothly, steering gently and stopping where you intend. You may repeat this many times. That is normal and exactly how skills form.
Common First-Lesson Feelings
"There is too much to remember."
Yes, at first. By the third or fourth lesson, much of it becomes automatic. Your instructor will remind you of each step.
"I stalled. Am I bad at this?"
No. Almost every manual learner stalls. It is part of finding the clutch.
"I feel nervous."
Very normal. Tell your instructor so the pace can be set for you. Read our page on nervous learners for more.
After the Lesson
Think about what you learned and what felt difficult. Some learners write down the cockpit drill to remember it. Book your next lesson soon; regular lessons help skills stick. If you have questions, ask your instructor or message us on WhatsApp.
